This condition is technically known as ‘bruxism’. It can particularly happen in sleep. The jaws clench, and teeth surfaces may be ground down, resulting perhaps in severe dental damage. Dentists will provide protective night-guards for the ‘bruxer’.
As can be imagined, psychological factors often play a part. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate the behaviour. Hypnotherapy procedures usually look for the cause, and then deal with the habit that has developed. An underlying verbal aggressiveness might perhaps be manifested through this condition.
Teeth-grinding hypnotherapy may be useful for the client. The initiating events are revealed, explored and resolved. The ever-vigilant unconscious mind is then instructed that as soon as any teeth-grinding should about to happen, instead, the jaw muscles will automatically relax.
Self-hypnosis may be taught, in order to reinforce the suggestions.
